Short Hills' Wet Day!

Campers had so much fun at wet day today! The counselors got soaked!

Tales from Edison - Week 5

Take a look at one of the blogs from a student taking Shark Tank, Jr.
"This week I did Shark Tank, Jr. I was really surprised on how detailed the course is. Not only that, but we have an amazing teacher. I am really excited when I actually perform or present my product to the "Sharks." This class was both interesting and fun."
"Shark Tank, Jr. is awesome!!! We come up with a product, prototype, and so on. Tomorrow, we are going to present our products to the sharks - a.k.a. parents and counselors. Soon our the ads we are making will be on your TV. I hope I can come to International Ivy Summer Program next summer."

Below is a video of a student showing off the robot he created in Lego NXT Robotics.

Far Hills Shows Us How to Capture the Flag

Rohan is absolutely blissful as he runs back to his side of the field.

Riaan is making a dash for the flag while his brother, Ishaan, runs in to tag him.

Ethan misses Varun by inches as Varun tumbles back into his side of the field.

Varun makes the best of being sent to jail.

Ishaan and Varun chill out after an intense game of Capture the Flag.

A Gift From the Cake Design Class!

Last week at Short Hills, the cake design class baked the staff a beautiful cake!

Quotes from Students at Caldwell Week 4

"This camp is awesome!  This week I am in Minecraft Engineers.  We learn how to build cool, complex, and massive structures together such as the Golden Gate Bridge and an Aztec Temple.  We can free build in our houses in Minecraft and go exploring.  This camp is so much fun."-A.L.

"This week I learned about animation.  We made a movie out of Legos.  We also made a movie with glass pebbles.  I made a slide show about nature."-R.P.

"This week I took Acting for Film.  It was very similar to real movies in theaters.  Of course nothing is perfect, so we we took several takes in order to achieve the perfect scenes.  I'm proud of our movie that we made."-G.P.

"I took Fashion Design.  We developed our own fashion lines and created our own products.  We also figured out our common elements for our designs."-S.G.

"In Fashion class we start the day with free.  We sketch clothes and jewelry.  We also researched and did a report on influential designers and their products.  I had fun."-A.J.

"This week I took Animation.  We used stop animation, a process in which we take pictures after making little movements in the drawing or little adjustments to the scene.  We used Legos and little stones for two of our movies.  We added in audio to enhance our films.  It was really fun."-A.V.

"I learned a lot about fashion trends and designers.  I also learned that designers have a common element, or a central theme, to their designs.  I had fun sketching and creating my own jewelry and clothes."-A.G.

"Among all of the classes offered at this camp, I took Video Game Creation.  So far I have made three games.  I made a game about a deer, one with a dragon, and one maze game.  Wet day was very fun.  We had a water balloon toss, a water shooter game, and the dunk tank.  I enjoyed this week very much."-G.M.

"I liked Robotics a lot at International Ivy. Building some of robots was difficult, but I still liked it anyways. Also all the camp counselors were friendly." -A.C.

"Filming was really fun. We got to film and use a clapboard. We also got to create a movie. For the movie, the teacher provided equipment for us to use. At the beginning of film making we got to plan out the movie. Also we got to draw every scene of it. I think film making is so much fun." -C.L.

"In film making, we were making our own movie called Hack'd. We learned how to use a camera and a clapboard. The hard part was planning out the movie. Caitlyn is Katie, Nick is a night guard, Gwin is Professor Von Boots, Charles is a henchman, and I'm Dr.Elle. Film making is so much fun!" -A.V.

"This week I took the mobile app design class. We're using GameSalad program to create the game pong on a mobile device. It took a long time to make because the instructions were a bit confusing. The whole class' games got all wonky at times, even though we follow the instructions. At times the whole thing would go berserk! Sometimes we got upset because of the programs but Nick, our teacher, would make up for it by telling jokes and helping fix the problems. So either way in the end it was a good class and it was fun!" -J.K.

"This week I took Mobile App Design. We used GameSalad to create an app. For practice, we made a version of Pong. I got stuck a lot but I got help through the way. Still, overall, it was a fun class to take."
-A.V

"This week in camp I did Mobile App Design. It was challenging but I enjoyed it anyway. It was harder than I expected but I had fun.  I liked the camp and the teachers and counselors were very nice. I would mostly likely come next year and try this class again." -M.C.

"Minecraft was very fun.  We built the Golden Gate Bridge, a Home Depot, towns, and other awesome structures.  I was taught to utilize materials in the game to replicate buildings in real life.  This was a very good class."-G.P.

"Robotics is very cool.  We get to build robots with actual Lego pieces and a motor.  Film making is also a fun class.  We made a movie and a script.  We then took turns filming each other acting out the scenes and we made an awesome movie!"-N.H.

Sherry and Kenny: Live From Edison

Hi!

This is Sherry and Kenny, and we are the counselors at Edison! Time has flown by these past five weeks. Edison has been quite busy with students finding their inner entrepreneurial skills in Lemonade Stand, challenging their brains with math problems in Math Olympiad, and perfecting their icing skills in Cake Design. Each week we are impressed by our campers many talents outside of the classroom, whether it be killing it on the soccer field, creating original Halloween costumes, or strategically aiming their water shooters. Edison may only be on a half-day schedule, but we have more than half the fun. Announcing for the first time to the public, we have created the first-ever "International Ivy Quiz Bowl!" Twice this summer, students have tested their knowledge with everything from geography, to world cuisine, to sports. Do you know what hummus is made out of? Do you know where your larynx is? Well, you better find out quickly before campers buzz in their answer! A fan favorite at Edison is gaga. Luckily enough for our campers, we have our very own gaga pit located on the playground. Every Tuesday, students sprint to the pit and battle to be the last person standing in this awesome game of non-stop concentration and coordination. We are saddened that there are only 3 more weeks left, but then we remember, weeks 6 and 7 will be FULL-DAY (hooray!)! We already preparing our crazy hair, special backwards schedule, and mix and match day! Edison is just busy, busy, busy. Well, kickball is only 20 minutes away, so we have go grab the bases.

Until next time,

Sherry and Kenny,
Edison Counselors
